Data and calculation methods

How WHENTHER uses observations, forecasts and general clothing guidance.

WHENTHER · Content updated:

Observations, forecasts and interpretation

Current weather refers to the observation time shown. Hourly forecasts describe expected conditions for individual hours. Clothing guidance is WHENTHER’s interpretation of this data. Check notices for old or unknown timestamps. A server refresh does not mean the source published new information at that moment.

Selected location and linked weather station

The selected location is the address you choose. Nearby addresses may share a weather station or forecast data. Compare the linked location and observation time. A regional page does not guarantee measurements outside your door or describe every street’s microclimate.

Current clothing and your outing

Current clothing guidance first uses the supplied apparent temperature, falling back to air temperature. The outing tool uses hourly forecast air temperatures, including both selected endpoints. Hourly apparent temperatures are unavailable, so current apparent temperature is never copied into the future. All times are Korea Standard Time. The start of the hour already in progress is marked as the current hour.

If the minimum is below 12°C, guidance suggests a warm outer layer. Below 23°C, or with a range of at least 8°C, it suggests a removable layer. Otherwise it starts with light clothing. An additional warm-weather note appears when any hour reaches 28°C. These are WHENTHER’s general reference thresholds, not guarantees of personal comfort or safety.

Precipitation and missing data

Hours with a precipitation probability of at least 40%, or a forecast precipitation type, are highlighted. Rain remains possible below this threshold. Hourly probabilities are not added; their maximum is not the probability of rain over the whole outing. Consecutive wet hours are grouped only within the same Korean date and never across missing hours.

Temperature and probability coverage are checked separately. When some temperatures are missing, only the available range is shown and a whole-period clothing conclusion is withheld. Missing probabilities do not invalidate available temperature guidance. Missing values are neither filled with zero nor interpolated. For duplicate instants the last supplied row wins; this does not establish a newer publication time.

Sources and limitations

We use Korea Meteorological Administration observations and forecasts, and Korea Environment Corporation AirKorea air-quality data. Check KMA Weather for official forecasts and alerts, and AirKorea for air quality. Clothing, lifestyle indices and road-surface temperature interpretations or estimates should be distinguished from official observations. Consider wind, indoor conditions, activity, clothing materials, personal comfort and forecast uncertainty.
