About this neighborhood

Choryangdong was the district of Gucho-ryang in Dongnae-bu's Sacheon-myeon during the Joseon Dynasty. Under Japanese colonial rule, it became Busan-bu's Chung-myeon Choryangdong in 1910. After liberation, it became part of Choryangchuljangseo and later, in 1982, absorbed the legal dong of Daechang-dong 3-ga. Choryangdong experienced many transitions. According to the Dongguk Yeoji Seungnam and the Dongnae-bu-ji, Choryanggang was located on the inner side of Jeol-yeong-do, and the entire Busan Harbor coast within Yeong-do-an was called Choryanggang. Choryangdong was known in Korean as "saetwi or saetor" (new land for reeds). The word "saetwi" combines cho (草, grass/reeds) and dtwei/nyang (梁, beam/bank), using Chinese phonetic notation. When the municipal division was reformed in 1906 and the name Gucho-ryang was replaced with names such as Bupyeong-dong and Bumin-dong, the newly established Choryangdong (新草梁, New Choryangdong) became the established name for Choryangdong.
