About this neighborhood

The Gwangtan-myeon region was part of Goguryeo's Suljihol-hyeon during the Three Kingdoms period, then Hanju's Bongseong-hyeon during the South-North States period, Yangju during the early Goryeo period, Seowon-hyeon of Yangguangdo during the late Goryeo period, and remained under Paju County until the end of Joseon. The term 'Gwangtan' appeared in the 1841 'Paju Mokeupji' (파주목읍지), from which we can infer that it had previously used nearly the same name in the same region. The water flowing from both Yangju County's Baekseok-myeon and Gwangjuk-myeon converges into Munsan Stream, forming an extensive shallow water area, from which the name Gwangtan (廣灘, broad shallows) derives. In 1899 (Gwangmu 3), it consisted of six districts. In 1914, Machang-ri of Yangju County's Baekseok-myeon was added, creating seven districts. In 1983, under Presidential Decree No. 11027, Gisan-ri and Yeongyang-ri from Yangju County's Baekseok-myeon were incorporated, bringing the current composition to nine districts centered around Shinsan-ri, the seat of the myeon.
