About this neighborhood

In 665, during the 5th year of King Munmu of Silla, it belonged to Salpyang-ju. However, in 757, during the 16th year of King Gyeongdeok of Silla, administrative reorganization resulted in it becoming part of Yangju, one of the nine provinces and five capitals. When Yangju was renamed from Yangju (良州) to Yangju (梁州) during the early Goryeo period under King Taejo, this area remained under Yangju's jurisdiction. According to the Goryeo History's geographical section, during Goryeo's King Seongjong's 14th year, it was part of Yeongdo, Yeongdong, Sannam, and one of three other regions. In 1413, during the 13th year of Joseon's King Taejong, as local administrative organization established the current myeon as "hyang" or "bang," Yangju was renamed "Yangsan-gun," and Habuk-myeon came under Yangsan-gun's jurisdiction. Although records are uncertain about when exactly this occurred, before 1897, the current Sangbuk-myeon, Sangsam, Jwasam, Sinjeon, Seokjang (currently Oestseok-ri), and Habuk-myeon's Samgam, Yongyeon, Malneung (currently Nok-dong), Dapgok, Samsu, Chosan, and Sunji (11 ri total) were collectively called "Habuk-bang." In 1897, Sangsam, Jwasam, Seokjang, and Sinjeon-ri were separated and called "Jungbuk-bang."
