About this neighborhood

The toponym Chodang derives from the pen names of three renowned historical figures: Gyosan Heo Gyun, who authored Korea's first Korean-language novel "The Tale of Hong Gildong"; poet Heo Nanseo-haeon, who brought civilization to the East Asian three countries; and their father Heo Yeop. The pen name of Heo Yeop was "Chodang" (Thatched Hall), which became the village's name. In ancient times, Chodang-dong was part of the Ye tributary state. In 127 BC, it was incorporated into Changhae-gun. During the Han Dynasty under Emperor Wu, it was part of Imdun. From 30 BC, it became part of Dongye, then Hasilla during the Goguryeo period, Haseoseokgyeong (Seoul's secondary capital) during the Silla period, Dongwon-gyeong's subordinate county during Goryeo, and Jin-gwan-bu during the Joseon period. After liberation, it belonged to Gangneung-eup from 1913, then became part of Gangneung-myeon in 1916, and Gangneung-eup in 1931. On September 1, 1955, when Gangneung-eup was merged with Gyeongpo-myeon and Seongdeok-myeon to become Gangneung City, the administrative dong was renamed Chodang-dong, administering the legal dongs of Chodang and Gangmun.
